Marcel Wanders, is the Dutch world famous product and interior designer we asked to participate in our “In the Sign of Movement” project to create a new approach to travel for the contemporary globetrotter. We recently met him in Milan where he presented his Saint-Jacques collection for FABBRICAPELLETTERIEMILANO.
It is our pleasure to share with you all the first part of this exclusive interview.
FABBRICAPELLETTERIEMILANO: You have a hectic lifestyle and travel a great deal for business, how does Marcel Wanders relax and wind down?
Marcel Wanders: Marcel Wanders does not relax to wind down. I think the word “relaxing” means that there is a level of strain. What I mean is that if a person feels the need to relax it because they have been living in a state of stress. I don’t do this, I am stress less. And so I don’t relax.
FPM: Well you are very lucky man indeed!!
FPM: You have a very eclectic nature especially if we consider all the different types of products you have designed, from wallpaper to lighting, to bath fixtures and of course suitcases. From where do you draw inspiration, it is the same source of inspiration for each project you approach?
Marcel Wanders: I believe inspiration is a word that has been misused. When I think of inspiration it’s a term that should be used to describe what pushes people to buy a book, or the reason that when somebody sees a red cabinet they in turn make red cabinets. For me inspiration is different, it’s inside of me, a burning fire which gives me a reason to live, and to wake up every morning. Inspiration represents the set of values I want to give to the world and that I create with my talent; it’s the meaning I want to give the things I do. Creating inspires me beyond anything and inspiration is what makes my challenges clear to me and shows me what I want to achieve. I take my inspiration from the questions I ask myself as my inspiration comes from within.
FPM: I read a story behind the creation of a special pin you made as a young man and when we compare it to the motto of your studio we note that they both have a deep meaning and that they are linked to each other.
Marcel Wanders: Along time ago I had a girlfriend who was very sick at the time. Every morning I would look at her to check that she was still breathing. I decided to make a little pin for her with the words HERO and when I gave it to her and she wore it for the first time I understood how very valuable and meaningful is was for her. I thought it was a fantastic idea and from then on I wanted to find ways to make this project larger so more people could enjoy and benefit from it. But I was faced with the fact that I didn’t have 100 heroes and so for a very long time this urge remained in my soul. Then one day, I was asked to do the cover of a magazine – initially I wasn’t interested and declined the offer but after three days I called the magazine back and asked them if they would let me do the ENTIRE magazine. The magazine that we went on to publish spoke about the important values in life and how to recognise these values in other people and how important it is to let these people know how much you value them. Each reader would receive a little pin which was included in the magazine as a token and symbol of their value. This magazine received 500,000 subscriptions: 500,000 people gave another 500,000 people the little pin I had designed, this little piece of nothing.
I love the idea that design can be more than a material activity, that it can also be a psychological activity, and therefore speak to people about the values in life. To do that in such immaterial way was priceless. It was a very meaningful project for a million people in a country of 50 million inhabitants….. so yes, it was truly a fantastic project.
